The Wing Chun Way Based on efficiency and economy of movement, Wing Chun seeks the most direct and quickest method of penetrating an opponent’s defense and gaining victory. Effectiveness is achieved through the assessment of the situation and players, an appropriate strategy and execution. Physically, a practitioner’s strength comes from his or her ability to leverage body mechanics through superior posture and structural strength. While physical conditioning is a key component of keeping fit and maintaining strength, it is not the essence of Wing Chun. Wing Chun strategy combines the mental and physical, demanding that the fighter balances the situation with his own strengths and weaknesses.Unlike other martial arts which teach the exchange of blows, Wing Chun teaches students to fight the opponent, giving way when the attacker presses on and attacking when the opponent withdraws. “A good fight should be like a small play...but played seriously. When the opponent expands, l contract. When he contracts, l expand. And when there is an opportunity... l do not hit...it hits all by itself.” - Bruce Lee |
